The Fire Prevention Week Them for 2023 is "Cooking Safety Starts with You" and is dedicated to educating everyone about simple but important actions they can take to keep themselves and those around them safe while cooking. Did you know that cooking is the number cause of home fires and home injuries?

Our members are committed and hard at work creating content, programs and community-wide activities to assist the NFPA in delivering the message them for this year. As always, the Department will also provide direct education to elementary students Grades Pre-K through 3rd grade in person during Fire Prevention Week.

Fire Prevention Week dates back to 1922 when President Coolidge proclaimed Fire Prevention Week a national observance, making it the longest-running public health observance in our country. The primary focus of the week is for children, adults, and teachers learn how to stay safe in the event of a fire. Fire Prevention Week is observed each year during the week of October 9th to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire (October 8, 1871) that caused 250 casualties, more than 100,000 people were left homeless, and destroyed over 17, 400 structures in the city of Chicago, Illinois.
